When it does need attention, a few simple habits can help maintain its appearance, construction, and everyday feel.

Mild soap + lukewarm water.Use gentle cleaning rather than reaching for stronger household chemicals or abrasive methods.

There is no need to clean your jewelry on a fixed daily or weekly schedule simply because you wore it.
Low-maintenance does not mean no care. It means giving the piece attention when something actually calls for it.

Jewelry you leave on naturally encounters products, moisture, friction, and movement. These exposures can contribute to residue, dullness, fine scratches, or other normal cosmetic changes.
How to Clean Solid 14K Gold
Five gentle steps are usually enough.
Rinse
Use lukewarm water to loosen surface residue.
Clean Gently
Use a small amount of mild soap with your fingers or a soft, lint-free cloth.
Detail Areas
Use a clean, very soft-bristle brush where buildup collects. Do not scrub aggressively.
Rinse Again
Remove soap and loosened residue thoroughly.
Dry
Pat dry with a clean soft cloth and allow the jewelry to dry fully.

We do not recommend cleaning simply because a certain number of days have passed.
What Not to Use
More aggressive doesn't mean more effective.
Routine care does not require abrasive household products or strong chemicals. Simple and gentle is usually the better approach.
Ultrasonic & Steam Cleaners
Do not assume every piece should go into an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Suitability depends on more than the gold itself.
Stone settings, small components, construction, and individual designs can all matter. Use one only if a qualified jeweler confirms that it is appropriate for the specific piece.
Caring for a Polished Finish
Real gold can scratch.
Varenel jewelry has a polished finish. With everyday wear, polished solid gold naturally develops fine scratches, light surface marks, and subtle changes in reflectivity.
These changes do not mean a yellow-gold plating layer is wearing away. Our current solid 14K yellow gold does not rely on a yellow-gold plated surface.

What to do after real-life moments.
Clean when buildup appears.
For fully healed piercings, ordinary showering is generally compatible with solid 14K gold. Soap, shampoo, conditioner, and skincare can leave residue over time.
Watch pressure and snagging.
Many people leave flat-back earrings in while sleeping once the piercing is fully healed. Comfort still depends on anatomy, placement, post length, and sleeping position.
Rinse after heavy sweat.
Sweat and body products can leave residue. During exercise, physical impact, snagging, and pulling are often more relevant risks than sweat itself.
Fresh water afterward.
For occasional swimming with fully healed piercings, rinse jewelry after chlorine or salt-water exposure and allow it to dry.
Skincare, makeup, and hair products can leave a film.
You do not need to build your entire routine around avoiding contact with your earrings. Where practical, reducing direct product buildup can simply help jewelry stay cleaner for longer.
If residue accumulates, return to the gentle cleaning routine rather than using stronger chemicals.
Stone Care
Clean the stone gently. Protect the setting too.
Remove oils and buildup gently.
Use lukewarm water, mild soap, and — where useful — a clean, very soft-bristle brush. Pay particular attention to the back and sides where residue may collect.
Hard stone. Still a fine setting.
Lab-grown diamonds can be cleaned with the same gentle routine. The durability of the diamond does not make the surrounding setting or small jewelry components indestructible.
The Setting Matters
A durable stone doesn't make the setting indestructible.
Do not poke, push, or test a stone with a needle or another object. Instead, pay attention to changes you can see or feel during normal handling.

Caring for Internally Threaded Flat Backs
Precision works best when you don't force it.
Internally threaded jewelry relies on a precise connection between the decorative end and the opening inside the post.
Keep small threaded areas reasonably free from buildup.
Start the decorative end straight rather than at an angle.
The connection should begin engaging smoothly.
If it catches, sits at an angle, or requires unusual force, stop and realign rather than forcing it.
Thread Tightness
Secure,

With clean, dry hands, hold the post or flat back steady and gently turn the decorative end until it feels comfortably secure.
Overtightening places unnecessary stress on small components and can make removal more difficult.
Install & Remove
Keep the movement controlled and gentle.

Hold the post and flat back steady.
Align the threaded decorative end directly with the post opening.
Turn slowly until the threads engage smoothly.
Continue until comfortably snug. Do not overtighten.
To Remove
Hold the post or flat back steady.
Gently turn the decorative end in the opposite direction.
Allow the thread to disengage completely before pulling components apart.
If it is unusually tight or difficult to reach, ask a professional piercer for help.
Some care questions are really fit questions.
A qualified professional piercer may be the better person to help when installation, removal, placement, anatomy, or healing is part of the issue.

Wearing your jewelry does not remove legitimate manufacturing-defect warranty rights. Proper care helps reduce avoidable damage, while eligible defects are reviewed under our 2-Year Warranty.

Some surface scratches may sometimes be reduced through professional refinishing, but polishing removes a very small amount of metal. It should not be treated as necessary every time a fine scratch appears.
Professional Cleaning
Varenel does not currently offer a routine professional cleaning or refinishing service. For ordinary buildup, the gentle at-home method in this guide is usually sufficient.

Do I need to clean my earrings every day?
No. Most days, no special cleaning is needed. Clean your jewelry when you notice buildup, dullness, heavy sweat residue, or after meaningful chlorine or salt-water exposure.
Can I use toothpaste to clean 14K gold?
We do not recommend it. Toothpaste can contain abrasive ingredients that are unnecessary for a polished gold surface. Mild soap, lukewarm water, and gentle cleaning are usually enough.
Can I use baking soda?
We do not recommend baking soda for routine Varenel jewelry care because its abrasive texture is unnecessary for polished fine jewelry.
Can I use rubbing alcohol?
We do not recommend rubbing alcohol as a routine jewelry-cleaning method. For ordinary care, mild soap and lukewarm water are generally enough.
Can I use hydrogen peroxide?
We do not recommend hydrogen peroxide as part of routine Varenel jewelry cleaning.
Can I put my earrings in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Only if a qualified jeweler confirms that ultrasonic cleaning is appropriate for the specific piece. Stone settings and small components matter as much as the gold itself.
Can I use a steam cleaner?
Use a steam cleaner only if a qualified jeweler has confirmed that it is appropriate for the specific jewelry design and setting.
Can I shower in solid 14K gold?
For a fully healed piercing, ordinary showering is generally compatible with solid 14K gold. Soap, shampoo, conditioner, skincare, and mineral deposits can still leave residue.
For a new or healing piercing, follow the aftercare guidance provided by your professional piercer.
Can I swim in my earrings?

Stop rather than forcing it. Make sure the decorative end and post are aligned and try again gently.

Can I clean CZ and lab-grown diamonds the same way?
For routine Varenel care, both can be cleaned gently with lukewarm water, mild soap, and careful use of a clean, very soft-bristle brush where needed.
Always treat the surrounding setting gently.
What should I do if a stone looks loose?
Do not push or test the stone with another object. Stop wearing the piece and contact Varenel if the stone visibly shifts, moves, tilts, or the setting appears damaged.
Are scratches normal on solid gold?
Yes. Solid 14K gold is not scratch-proof. Fine scratches and surface marks are a normal part of wearing polished real-gold jewelry.
